This is one of Cox's largest compositions, exceeded in width only by Rhyl Sands of 1854 (Birmingham City Art Gallery). Between 1843 and 1853 Cox painted twelve compositions with this title (although the repeated leitmotif was the central figure group, which was adjusted for each version). The present picture dates from 1852.
