Repose, the Flower Girl
signed l.l.: J W GODWARD. and bears a date of 1899
oil on canvas
25.5 by 33cm., 10 by 13in.
The painting Repose: The Flower Girl has been reassessed and authenticated by Dr. Vern G. Swanson and will appear in his enlarged and revised second edition on the artist, John William Godward. The painting's date of 1899 does not conform to the appearance of the painting. Upon examination of the signature Dr. Swanson believes that it was strengthened by a conservator with the incorrect date of 1899. Originally the date was probably from c.1887 which conforms with the style, subject and technical prowess of the young Godward. The painting is of a Roman flower seller, a popular theme for nineteenth century artists.
